Ground bat out of hell
Rocky horror pepper and salt
Two out of three scrambled eggs
Worcestershire sauce right out of my mouth
I would do anything for onion
Garlic out of hell too
Seasoned bread crumbs for the both of us
Dead green pepper rings
Parsley by the dashboard lights
Parmesan dreams come through
Dry eyed tomato sauce
And courage meant meeting life's challenges head on
While walking in the woods
one overcast day
my eyes to the ground
lost in thought
my soul feeling down
I noticed the fallen leaves
in their state of decay
the broken branches
the soft rotten logs
the forest in disarray
everything I saw
had plenty to say
death was the friend
who would meet me
at the end of my stay
That is until thunk
a squirrel was a skunk
hurling acorns my way
forcing me to look up
and thus lifted the grey
There were birds in the trees
their songs on the breeze
the sun poking fun
at a stellar blue jay
my life was not done
Sometimes the squirrels are people
sometimes the trees are steeples
sometimes it takes a few nuts
to make us see that we can play
and that is encouraging
The simple sun shines on a little corner of the earth
in a place where nature made a woodland home town
and if you believe like old man Walter did
Extraordinary animals sing and dance together there
tiny miracles abound
nymphs and sprites create the atmosphere of celestial Jerusalem
Squirrels chatter from the lower branches of their covered bridge
all the while a carpet of lush clover provides supper
for a friendly bunny rabbit we like to call thumper
When I sit here, you look so pretty in your coat and hat so white
All the time we spent listening to the birds and squirrels chatter
All the time we spent watching the fat man down the road tatter
Telling his garden toads to stay out of the road or go all splatter
Its was a warm summer day on the worm farm
your white coat turned grey then dark brown
I spied your eyes as all my fears trickled down
how could something so playful harm this clown
While I sit here you look so thrifty with your swollen heart so tight
wrapped in your nonchalant embrace, tell me what is the matter?
You won't play ball, pitcher or catcher, centerfield or be the batter
Still the sun shines through the window sill and you're just a ratter
It was just another day at the old salt mine
you turned my smiling melody into a dreadful frown
when you showed up in that slick black evening gown
shattering my fragile heart as you strode off into town
Once you swerved at my feet tripping me up in the dead of night
Chasing after theoretical strings, crazy as Alice's maddening hatter
I was slaving away to earn us a living while you just got fatter n fatter
Get out of my car little pet, you're driving me nuts with your pitter patter
It was a cold and rainy day at the gin mill
Like you owned the place, purring in your royal crown
Distilling my suffered end, my odd given right to drown
I tell you once again little cat, SCAT! Meow is not a noun!
Lloyd and Jeff's umbrella policy?
Playing a guitar with extra long fingers perhaps?
An original musical connection played by another artist?
A wooden trestle in Oley Pa?
Four card players with enough money to bet?
A sniper keeping watch over an overpass?
My shaded nasal passages?
Maybe a lecture on dentistry?
Or just simply, a crossword puzzle solution.
It was a Saturday night
and I had $5 in my pocket.
I took my sweetheart to the dance.
Music had the place on fire.
She took off her top and said
" Let's go for a swim!" So I pushed her in.
That's when the eruptions began.
Men in their shaggy tattered shorts
danced all around the rim
while the rivers ran red.
Rising smoke, rising din
swirled around my head.
Then the dragon took its bride,
swallowed my pride
deep inside and smiled.
Out of the sky glittering gold
A celestial being shimmering and bold
swooped down,
looked me in the eyes.
She frowned
and seemed quite surprised.
(In a low voice she said)
"Where do you come from?"
"From across the open ocean."
Her ancient city
rose up out of the sea
It was looking oh so pretty
with its streets all lined with gold.
Pillars of salt carved into men
captured His story
or so I was told.
And the celestial being turned.
In a softer voice coy and sly,
"My friend, come away with me"
as the walls of the city
climbed up into the sky.
"Leave this nitty-gritty place."
I was compelled to comply
so I gestured with a sigh
gave my final goodbye
to the whole human race
as the curtain of brimstone fell.
Here on earth
the gods are just men
heroes of turf and celluloid
and how much they spend
worshiped for their arms and teeth
pennies and loafing
those are not my beliefs.
So with great relief
I entered into
the allabaster walled city
of the new Jerusalem
up in the sky.
