It's the third week of the season and things are looking good for the Kansans City Chiefs. The local team, nicknamed the Flubitup Bills have won one and lost one, both in the final minute. Today they play their division rival Jets in the Meadowlands. Both teams are tied at 1-1.

I used to be a true football fan. I loved the Cowboys back in the Tom Landry, Roger Stauback days. I cheered them on during the Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman era. It is hard though to get really excited about this years team. I quietly sit with my fingers crossed hoping they have a winning season, that is, better than 500.

The Bills on the other hand are a team to watch and love and hate both at the same time. I don't think any other team has found as many different ways to lose a game over the last 15 seasons as Buffalo. Still I keep secretly rooting for them, hoping they win each time they go out on the field. I am not a Bills fan, but so many of the people I love are,  my wife, mom and sisters I keep hoping that at the very least, the players don't embarrass themselves each Sunday. As long as they play well, keep the game close and exciting a loss isn't quite as painful.

I was reading a post last week, in which the blogger was saying that they didn't get football. I think it isn't so much the game itself that is important as the whole experience surrounding the game. Football on Sundays is a pleasant distraction from a long arduous workweek, the onset of cold harsh weather and the drudgery of otherwise mundane lives. To see these young men exert themselves with complete abandon and sacrifice themselves physically and emotionally is socially therapeutic. It is a brutal improvised ballet of quickness, strength and endurance. sometimes it is frustrating, others heartbreaking, but mostly it is exciting and entertaining.

As a youngster I enjoyed playing the game. I could run and catch the ball well. I had great balance and quickness. It sharpened my skills as an observer, because on the football field things happen fast. Of course I took my lumps, bumps and bruises, cuts and scrapes. You learn to tough it out when things get a little rough. It does a young man good to learn how to handle life's more difficult moments. Many young men just aren't tough enough, physically or mentally to cope with the challenges they face. Toughness is important. Toughness and kindness go hand in hand. When you have suffered through deep pain, you learn to be compassionate towards others who are suffering.

Back to the game. Buffalo at NY, 4:25 PM. Who are you rooting for? Do you have a favorite team? Do you enjoy the game?

  • Thank you, I'll try that. :)

  • I'm in the category of football-illiterate. I never could figure out a logical reason to watch or how, exactly, one was supposed to choose a team to care about.

  • Alas, I once was able to connect to a team or game. I am now like Adam after he ate the forbiden fruit. Knowledge sucks in so many ways.

  • I judge a team by how good their logo looks on their helmets...the patriots are my favorite and the falcons a close second and the falcons are my home team...but I just haven't gotten into the game since Joe stopped wearing panty hose =/

  • Not happy with my Niners. 'Nuff said.

  • We really aren't into NFL, but we are in to College Football.....I'm so ticked off at the Big 10, that I just may not ever watch our game on that channel!!

We are told the game showings, but when we turn it to the Big 10 Network, they have 3 different games showing at the same time....One is shown on the Big 10, the other two on line.....And....To make a long story short, we have to sign up for the Big 10, and then pay, to watch our game! I so don't like that at all!

  • I chose my fav teams (or who I root for)based on the colors of the uniform. And how the players look in the uniform. :-D
My method is very complicated! ;-) :-P
What you said about suffering helping us be more compassionate...that is so true! I always find that as a good amongst the evil that suffering can be. And I'm always looking for the good.
    HUGS!!!
Hope you had a great weekend! Mine was super busy! :-)

  • today was a horrible day for me

  • I am lucky hubby doesn't watch much football I do have a Chiefs shirt it is my favorite shirt it was my sons when he out grew it he gave it to me

  • yeah whatever John! :-1

I get bored watching the game. The only time I kind of look at the screen is when the guy is trying to get a touch-down.
I used to watch Roger Stauback too. I think the players of that era were different and were good citizens, and upheld the values of the game. Now we have murderers among the players. ie: Hernandez.

  • The Jets and Bills are playing? We were watching SF vs. Colts... We left before the end of the game. I'm not invested since the Bears in the early 1980s with Refrigerator Perry, Walter "Sweetness" Payton, Mike Singletary, and that crazy QB Jim McMahon! oy! Now that was football worth watching. Oops! I almost forgot that QB destroying Richard Dent - he was so well named as he dented quite a few QBs! hehe!

  • I don't ever root for the Jets, and I sorta like Buffalo. That answer your question? Unfortunately, as this is typed, the Jets are on top. For now.

  • Uh... The Bills!

  • I used to love the game as well only played high school ball though. In the mid 70's the NFL arrived for me by way of the Steelers, the Mean Joe Greene, LC Greenwood, Ernie Holmes and Dwight White days of the steel curtain. And my favorite backer Jack front toothless Lambert, Jack Ham, Andy Russell and dbs Mel Blount, Donnie Shell don't remember others but do remember Offense guys like Harris, Bleier, Bradshaw, Swan, Stallworth and Webster...those guys. Didn't care much for the Cowboys back in the day cept for Golden Richards cause he played for the U of Hawaii. I don't have a favorite team anymore but do I enjoy a good game now and again and of course the Super Bowl. The game and philosophy has definitely changed with the high tech passing game. We had June Jones for several years he brought his run and shoot offense, a high scoring O.

I'm not sure if playing ball during the "water is a reward days" of football shaped the toughness needed for life, maybe it did, but back then you had to be sort of tough already to play ball for the Bear Bryant type coaches.

  • my 3yr old can name them all his bedroom is sports
