Eating With My Fingers

I live in a world of taboos and rules and restrictions, not the least of which is how to properly set the table for dinner. Forks go on the right, knives and spoons go on the left and all that. I stopped at a little restaurant to have lunch and ordered grilled salmon in a light dill sauce with a fresh garden salad. The lovely waitress brought out my order with a set of tableware. I opened the napkin and examined the fork. It seemed suitable enough. It was clean and shinney. I stared at it for a brief moment and then was hit by a sudden realization. My mother was nowhere to be seen, nor my wife, nor any of the other rule enforcers that I have had watching my every move all my life. So I set the fork off to the side and very slowly, with great care and deliberation began to eat my meal with my fingers.

How strange it seemed. We normally eat a sandwich with our hands, without question. We eat pizza and chicken wings, ice cream cones, corn on the cob etcetera. On and on the list goes, but garden salad with dressing? A grilled fish filet covered in sauce? God forbid someone should see me eating with my fingers. That's why they give you a fork! But as I looked around, no one was watching me. I delighted in the textures of the food, picking out each piece of lettuce and pondering it for a moment before placing it upon my tongue. It was completely exhilarating to my senses. With each bite of my lunch I licked the dressing and sauces from my fingers to let the flavors linger a little bit longer. I ate slower than I normally do.

Eating shouldn't be a chore, like some job we have to do, performed with rudimentary manufactured tools. Eating should be an adventure which titillates all our senses and satiates the deeper cravings of fulfillment. Perhaps that is why so many Americans struggle with weight issues. We just don't know how to appreciate a good meal properly, and we leave the table full of food but empty from the experience.

Make your next meal an adventure and try something different, put down the fork, and when you are done, lick your fingers.

Oh.. and be sure to wash your hands before you eat!

Thanks for adding that note about handwashing! It helps the food taste so much better!

I'm so glad you were able to enjoy your meal without the restrictions society and wives normally put on men. Personally though, I don't care how one eats a meal. The only thing that bugs me, is when people wipe their hands on their clothes!

I eat some things with my hands, but not salad. Fingers get too messy. Perhaps you might enjoy a debate with one of my coworkers, who eats French fries with a fork. Still, I think you are on to something with the appreciation of food. We do tend to scarf it down so quickly as to barely notice what we've eaten. Augh, now I'm hungry. Time for lunch.

Dude, the fork was shiny, use the fork. We're not animals anymore. We evolved our of the neanderthals long ago.

Ha! I think you're on to something, here. I agree with the fact that a lot of us really don't enjoy the experience. Glad you shared yours!

and I add: John, in doing so , you keep all day the perfume of the sauce remained below your nails !!!
BTW , in France the fork is on the left of the plate and spoon and knife at the right. Yes, we pick the bits of meat with the fork held by the left hand. But you have the right to hold the leg of your chicken at hand to c&arve the chicken with your teeth .

.......But...

I hold my fork with my right hand to till the garden .
Sigh ...it is hard to understand human behavior!

HAH! Turning an otherwise-ordinary meal into an epic excursion through the social norms imposed upon the individual. I'm glad you did it--now I don't feel like I have to. Besides, I'm not nearly bold enough to attempt to do something like that...especially out in public. Bravo!

Just  proves my point...some people need constant supervision...by the way the fork goes on the left, spoon and knife on the right!  Okay so I'll admit occasionally when no one is looking I'll love to rip a chicken apart with my fingers and eat it...just don't tell anyone!

I wish I could remember the title of the book I read in which this guy get into a car crash and wakes up to find himself in a healing place with people who feed each other and nuture each other beyond the "rules". Exceelnt story, but no title cames to mind. Lazy Sunday mind.  Enjoy life's sensations.

My 3 year old niece does that and it drives me nuts. It only bothers me because she then feels the need to touch me and everything around her! I already really enjoy my food because I eat slowly and there are sound effects! I'm not a fan of eating with my fingers though. I have some pretty long nails and trying to get everything from underneath is such a pain. I guess I could cut my nails! That's awesome that you tried this though.

In cultures where people eat with their hands - they only use their right hand. The left hand is reserved for bodily tasks (think Charmin bath tissue). This is also why we shake hands with the right hand only ..... And this useless bit of trivia is free of charge! :)

I've done this before. In the comfort of my own home... but still at the time I needed a better connection with my food. I tend to inhale everything without hardly chewing, which causes me to miss out on the textures and flavours of each bite. I've been depriving myself! I thought it was such a pity... and it was so liberating and exhilerating to allow myself to eat more slowly, and without the rules of etiquette.

I am amazed at this post John. The feelings you have described are my feelings and it almost felt like you knew me and my way of life.

Until about 1986, we all ate our food with our fingers. I still do very often. Rice and Biryani, and roti and naan with chicken khorma every bit with my fingers. It is so satisying and pleasing to the senses to use your fingers to eat the food you love.

I love it. Why do folks care so much if you use a fork or not? Some of the comments almost imply that you're hurting them somehow by choosing to put food into your own mouth from your own plate with your own hands. Nice social experiment. Way to go.

Bony fish is intended to be eaten by hand. Woe to the person who swallows a fish bone. You have to use your fingers to pick out the bones.

However expert sunflower seed eaters can spit out the shells in a rude manner.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Mr. Pitt and George eat a Snickers bar with a knife and fork... which is pretty much the opposite thing, but anyway...

I always eat my salad with my hand. Then again, I don't put dressing on my salad, so basically it really is like finger food in a salad-form.

Eating with hands makes everything more fun. Also it helps if you're lazy :P. Love eating rice with my fingers too.
